(Eucalyptus excerpt) Flooded Rose Red Basin

Yasmin Smith

(Eucalyptus excerpt) Flooded Rose Red Basin, created while Smith was on residency in Sichuan for Cosmopolis #1.5 curated by Kathryn Weir and presented in Chengdu, China by the Centre Pompidou. Smith’s studio was a ceramics factory in the agro-industrial lands of the Chengdu Plain. Surrounding the factory, are plantations of flooded gum (Eucalyptus grandis), a species of eucalyptus tree native to Australia, planted along roadsides and around farming land, bordering fields of green tea. Smith collected and cast specimens of the gumtree, furnishing the pieces in glaze she made from the ash of the original species. Smith explores the socio-ecological relationships between the plant, soil, water and the local community and reveals the memory of these trees, gleaned from chemical glaze evidence.
