From Delft to Hill End

Nathalie Hartog-Gautier

During my residency at Hill End (NSW) my studio was in the Butcher Shop. I was surprised to find 3 amazing long marble top tables with turned legs and delft inspired ceramic tiles along the 4 sides of each table.
Such sophisticated furniture in such a rugged landscape probably transported along the old Bridal Veil dirt Track.
All the tiles represent iconic Dutch scenes and, outside the studio, were the iconic rusted tin sheds part of the Australian landscape.
This inspired me to copy the tiles and draw tin sheds and buildings in Hill End and other places, creating a parallel between two landscapes: a European and an Australian landscape.
