They all look the same to me
Therese Ritchie
I was pondering the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s first voyage to Australia and the Pacific in 1770 and it reminded me of an incident in 1989 when I was introduced to a woman and her toddler who where living in a small dwelling in a remote outstation in the Gulf of Carpentaria. When that child saw me, she screamed and screamed, and screamed some more; so much so, that I had to leave the building. The old man I was with just laughed and said, “Don’t worry, you’re her Captain Cook”, meaning of course that I was her first white face. Now I know it was Captain Cook's anniversary and that this work draws upon The National Gallery's portrait of Arthur Phillip by Francis Wheatley, but hey, “They all look the same to me!"
